Lunar Frontier explores how architecture and spatial systems might emerge when human life is displaced from Earth and confronted with an environment fundamentally hostile to habitation.

Rather than beginning with the image of a lunar colony, the project asks a broader question: how can we construct a world by first understanding the systems that make life within it possible?

FOLDING EARTH, UNFOLDING SYSTEMS

The project originates from Folding Earth, Unfolding Systems, a research framework that reconsiders the map as more than a representation of geography.

The Earth is deconstructed into 50 interconnected layers spanning climate, ecology, resources, infrastructure, urbanization, human activity, and environmental change. Instead of reading these conditions independently, the research examines how they operate as a network — revealing dependencies between natural processes and the systems humans construct around them.

Using Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Projection, the project develops a methodology of overlapping, folding, and reconfiguration. Data layers are projected onto a modular twenty-triangle planetary framework, allowing different conditions and territories to be physically and conceptually brought into new relationships.

SEVEN ENVIRONMENTAL SCENARIOS

From this framework, seven environmental scenarios investigate conditions ranging from glacial retreat and eutrophication to habitat fragmentation, desertification, groundwater depletion, and finally human settlement on the Moon — the Lunar Frontier.

Each scenario moves between planetary, regional, and site scales, translating environmental relationships into spatial questions rather than predetermined architectural forms.

FROM SYSTEM TO HABITATION

Lunar Frontier becomes the framework’s most extreme test. Removed from the environmental systems that make terrestrial life possible, human habitation can no longer be treated as an isolated architectural object.

Space must operate as infrastructure, environmental mediator, resource system, shelter, and life-support simultaneously. Architecture emerges from necessity: circulation follows survival, enclosure responds to exposure, and inhabitation becomes inseparable from the systems that sustain it.

CONSTRUCTING AN INTERDEPENDENT WORLD

The resulting environment is therefore not conceived as a collection of buildings placed onto a lunar surface, but as an interdependent spatial world.

Drawing from the project’s investigation of superstructure, modularity, abstraction, and minimized form, architecture becomes a flexible framework capable of responding to changing environmental and human demands.

The emphasis shifts from designing singular objects toward constructing relationships between habitation, movement, resources, technology, and landscape.

Lunar Frontier ultimately treats world-building as a systems problem. Before imagining what another world should look like, the project constructs the conditions through which that world could exist. Mapping becomes a generative design tool; environmental data becomes spatial logic; and architecture becomes the physical expression of relationships operating at a planetary scale.
